After an active day Thursday for severe weather, strong storms are possible this weekend.
Showers and storms are increasingly possible by late Saturday afternoon and early evening, with severe weather possible through midnight. There is currently a slight overall risk areawide for hail up to the size of quarters and wind gusts up to 60 mph.
Of greater concern is Sunday’s forecast. Showers and storms appear likely for most of the day and evening. Overall, there is an enhanced risk areawide — but there could be two different rounds of severe weather, one in the afternoon hours and one in the late-night and overnight period into early Monday. Regardless, area residents could see hail up to 2 inches in diameter, wind gusts up to 75 mph and a few tornadoes. The current guidance also indicates a better atmosphere for tornadic activity in the late-night round.
The comes on the heels of Thursday’s tornadic activity, and the National Weather Service has confirmed 3 additional tornadoes along with the EF-1 tornado that hit Lake Kahola just before 6:30 pm. The Lake Kahola twister had peak wind gusts of around 110 mph, staying on the ground for about a mile with a maximum path width of 30 yards. The tornado damaged up to 15 units, damaged an Airbnb, destroyed 4 garages and flipped 4 boats. Cleanup continues indefinitely at the lake.
Lyon County had a confirmed EF-0 that was initially reported near Bushong but actually touched down about four miles south of Allen. It brought 85 mph winds along a one-mile path to three miles south-southwest of Admire.
There were two EF-0 tornadoes in Wabaunsee County, one that stayed near Volland with peak wind of 70 mph, a maximum path width of 30 yards and a damage path of half-a-mile. The other was on the ground near Alma with peak wind speeds of 70 mph and a maximum path width of 30 yards. It was on the ground for a little over 3 miles.
