There will be a change in one Lyon County polling place this election cycle.
County Clerk and Election Officer Amie Jones says the change is for Americus voters.
Jones says this works well for Election Office staffers.
Jones says the Americus City Council was open to the change, and she appreciated the willingness of the Masonic Lodge to serve as a polling place for years.
So far, there are no plans to change any other polling places in Lyon County. Polling places need to be able to house precinct voters. Parking availability, handicapped accessibility, data availability, working electricity and building security are all considered when locating polling places.
The primary election is Aug. 4. The candidate filing and withdrawal deadline is noon June 1. Voter registration ends July 14, with advance mail ballot voting starting June 15. Unlike past elections, there will not be a 3-day grace period for advance mail ballots to have votes counted if ballots arrive at county courthouses after the general election date — so people voting in advance and not doing so inside county courthouses will have to either mail their ballots the week ahead of the election, bring their ballots to election offices or, in Lyon County’s case, use the dropbox outside the County Courthouse.
