In a matchup of two teams ranked in the top ten of the Central Region softball rankings, Emporia State picked up a key sweep with wins of 3-2 and 9-6 at Central Missouri in a pair of makeup games yesterday. Trailing 2-0 in the fourth, the Lady Hornets scored three-straight runs thanks to a two-out triple by Addison Callaway that inning followed by a sacrifice fly in the fifth. Morgan Tomlinson (6-2) picked up the complete game win scattering eight hits while Sydney Wagner went 3-for-4 at the plate. ESU used the long ball to get on the board early in game two thanks to a Avery Brewer two-run shot after the Lady Hornets capitalized on a double steal attempt to lead 3-0 in the first. After adding a run in the second, the Jennies knotted the game with a four run burst in the second. The Black & Gold answered with a decisive five-run fifth inning scoring on a bases-loaded Ally Miller single before Brewer launched her second long ball of the day for a grand slam to blow the game open. Hannah Butterbaugh (12-5) pitched 3.2 innings in relief to pick up the win while Izzy Sloane worked two scoreless innings for her fourth save. ESU (28-15, 14-8 MIAA) has clinched a top-eight seed in the MIAA Tournament and wraps up the season hosting Washburn on Senior Day Saturday. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m. Pregame coverage of the Senior Day doubleheader begins at 1:30 p.m. on Mix 104.9.
