Greenwood County is the only area county currently with any listing of drought from the US Drought Monitor, but the Kansas Water Office has all area counties in a drought watch.
Kansas Governor Laura Kelly signed a proclamation this week updating the state’s drought declarations. The drought watch adds Chase County to the drought watch after it was not in any state drought declaration as part of the last update this past December.
The governor says drought conditions have worsened across much of the state so far this spring. Back in December, the western half of the state, along with Chase County, were not in any drought declaration. Now most of the west half of Kansas is in a drought warning, and far northwest and far southwest Kansas are now listed as in drought emergencies. State officials say drought conditions should intensify across west-central Kansas the next several months.
