A Texas man who pleaded no contest in a Lyon County vehicular homicide case has probation as his lead sentence.
Judge Jeff Larson sentenced Josue Chapa was to 3 years probation at sentencing Tuesday. There is an underlying prison term of 34 months for any probation violations. There is also 2 years of postrelease supervision included.
Chapa, of Grulla, Texas, was arrested in November after a crash in a Kansas Turnpike construction zone outside Emporia in May 2025. Chapa’s car hit a motorcycle driven by Richard Schroeder of St Joseph, Missouri.
Chapa had pleaded no contest to one count of involuntary manslaughter in March. Original charges of second-degree murder, aggravated child endangerment and endangerment were dropped.
