Learning software operations are back to normal at Emporia State University after significant cyberattacks on the software manufacturer several days ago.
Instructure, the company that operates the learning software platform Canvas, was hacked perhaps as soon as April 29 and then again within the last week. Emporia State says the system finally returned to normal Friday. ESU stresses no other on-campus systems were affected and this was not directed at the university. However, this was a “vendor-level” incident affecting higher education institutions across North America. Instructure says 30 million users across half of the colleges and universities across the continent use Canvas for communication between instructors and students, as well as assignments, grades and syllabus information.
The group ShinyHunters, the same entity that claimed responsibility for a large Ticketmaster data breach two years ago, is claiming credit for the two breaches at Instructure so far this month.
Flint Hills Technical College uses another learning system software package and was unaffected by the Instructure breaches.
