A brush fire is smoldering at the Emporia-Lyon County Transfer Station on Sunday, but officials say the situation is under control.
Emporia Fire crews were dispatched to what was reported as a large burn pile on fire at the Transfer Station around 11:30 pm Saturday. Fire Capt. Greg Davis says crews stayed on scene for around 2 hours before departing. Transfer Station employees have been monitoring the situation since then.
Public Works Interim Director Brian Silcott tells KVOE News the fire was contained, thanks to the efforts of Transfer Station personnel and Emporia firefighters, and isolated to a berm west of the main entrance. It is covered by several feet of fill dirt, but it will likely smolder for several days and will need more top fill dirt to keep it contained.
A cause has not been determined.
Silcott says the Transfer Station facility was never threatened by the fire and was not impacted. The facility is operating normally and uninterrupted, according to Silcott.
