Emporia High baseball couldn’t come through with the timely hit they needed Tuesday, falling 1-0 to Maize South in 10 innings in the Class 5A Kapaun Mt. Carmel Regional to end the season.
The Spartans had chances throughout the afternoon but were unable to cash in against the Mavericks’ pitching staff.
EHS threatened in the fifth inning after Caydrick Crouch singled and Oliver Kline doubled to put two runners in scoring position with two outs. Maize South escaped the jam when Grady Howe grounded out to shortstop to end the inning.
The Spartans mounted another opportunity in the seventh. Eluterio Trujillo led off with a single and Jackson Meinke followed with a walk, but three consecutive strikeouts ended the threat.
Emporia again put the first two runners aboard in the ninth after back-to-back walks to Trujillo and Meinke, but the Black and Red were unable to capitalize.
The game remained scoreless until the 10th inning when Maize South opened with a single, a hit batter and a walk against reliever Chase Harrington. Harrington recorded an out before Brody Epke delivered the game-winning hit for the Mavericks.
Colton Eubanks turned in a dominant start for the Spartans. The all-league performer tossed 7 2/3 innings and allowed just one hit while striking out three. Harrington took the loss after pitching the final 1 2/3 innings.
EHS out hit Maize South four to three.
Emporia closes the season with a 12-13 record.
