An algae alert continues for an Emporia lake.
King Lake on the Emporia State campus had its algae warning extended a week in the latest report from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. Warnings are issued when harmful algae blooms are either present or expected. King Lake has been in a warning since the start of the 2026 reporting season, or nearly 2 months.
Also, KDHE has announced an algae watch for Eureka Lake. Watches mean harmful algae blooms are possible or may have started.
Blue-green algae creates several toxins that can be harmful or deadly if consumed. Toxins can be eaten, inhaled or absorbed by skin contact, with symptoms including rash, headache, sore throat, diarrhea and fever. Animals swimming in or drinking algae-infested water — or those eating dried algae — can become seriously sick or die as a result of the toxins.
