The deadline is the close of business Monday, but an organizer of a petition to save Logan Avenue Elementary from closure hopes to wrap up her work well before then.
In fact, Olivia Grover says she wants to finish collecting petition signatures by Wednesday — and she’s alternatively nervous and optimistic about where things stand. Grover and a small team have gained over 1,000 signatures, above the 803 needed to force a review by Kansas State Department of Education General Counsel Scott Gordon — but those signatures haven’t been validated yet. What’s next? Turn-in.
Grover says there have been a variety of opinions about the potential closure.
When it comes to district personnel, Grover has noted a fear of reprisal.
Grover says this has been an important drive to her for several reasons.
Grover says closing Logan Avenue “takes away from the community that needs it most.”
The drive continues after the Emporia Board of Education voted to end school operations at Logan Avenue as part of a package of cost containment items. If the petition has enough valid signatures, the State Board of Education will then review the matter and make recommendations to the Emporia school board, which will then have a final vote to determine whether to close the school.
