The Kansas Turnpike Authority’s Emporia service area is due for a refresh, and the KTA has announced plans to that end.
Plans are to demolish and rebuild the facility at mile marker 132, five miles northeast of the Emporia tollgate. On Monday, the KTA announced Tessere of Wichita as the architect, Dondlinger & Sons Construction of Wichita as the construction manager and Fast N’ Friendly of Lenexa as the service operator. KTA says the new facility will be “designed to better serve today’s travelers,” with updated layouts, better amenities and long-term efficiencies. The current structures will be removed, with one “establishment” for food, fuel and other services as part of the new layout.
Construction begins this summer — and starting July 7, the current restaurants, Subway and Taco John’s, will be closed ahead of demolition. The construction process will not affect fuel and restroom availability.
