Flag Day weekend had a flying start in Emporia on Saturday.
Emporia’s American Legion Post 5, with help from the Patriot Guard Riders, put out 250 flags in the field just west of the Legion to represent each year since the building Declaration of Independence in 1776.
Post 5 Commander Clay Childs says the idea came as the result of a Flag Day schedule adjustment.
happening on Sunday, including a difficulty in having the Legion’s annual flag retirement ceremony, and the decision to plant 250 flags went better than he expected — even though Legion administrators reluctantly decided to pull the flags around 11 am Saturday in advance of severe weather chances. He sees the American flag as a symbol of unity that can be flown in many locations.
For Flag Day itself Sunday, the Emporia Lions Club is inviting people to wave American flags on the Road S bridge over Interstate 35 between 1-5 pm. The Chase County American Legion will have a flag retirement ceremony at 8 pm Sunday.
