Flag Day weekend began with a grand display of flags flying on the lawn of Emporia’s American Legion Post 5 and concluded with another display just east of town Sunday afternoon.
For the fifth consecutive year, the Lions Club of Emporia lined the Road S bridge over Interstate 35 with Old Glory to greet travelers along the corridor in honor of the holiday. Lion Gary Post says the patriotic display began back in 2021, near the tail end of the COVID-19 pandemic, when they were looking for an outdoor service project.
Post adds the event lives up to the Lions’ motto of “We Serve,” which is meant to promote positive impacts within the community, and there was no doubt the positivity was readily apparent Sunday.
The flags flown on the overpass were provided by the Patriot Guard Riders, who are known for being very active in patriotic displays throughout the calendar year. Most notably, they provide the flags during the annual Random Acts of Patriotism in recognition of the anniversary of 911.
Patriot Guard Rider Debi Fuller says that while Flag Day may not be an event always circled on everyone’s calendar, she says taking the opportunity to show pride in the flag and the country is one they never pass up.
