Emporia State University’s Mobilizing Literacy initiative is getting significant financial support from the Walter S and Evan C Jones Testamentary Trust.
ESU says the Jones Trust is granting $2.5 million over 5 years, with $500,000 payments per year, to help ESU expand the reach and develop opportunities for Teachers College students to be involved.
ESU’s Mobiilzing Literacy program has been funded through prior grants from the Jones Trust and has led to collaboration between the university, regional school districts and community organizations in a variety of forms, including expanding preschool and early-age learning opportunities, expanding family engagement activities, increasing “literacy-rich” classroom environments and the distribution of 40 Purposeful Play classroom packages with classroom furniture, instructional resources and literacy materials all included in Purposeful Play.
ESU says there has been a “dramatic” increase in third-grade English Language Arts College and Career-Ready outcomes in Lyon, Coffey and Osage county school districts as a direct result of the Mobilizing Literacy program.
