Severe storms are a possibility for much of the KVOE listening area Thursday into Friday.
The National Weather Service has widened its slight severe weather risk area to encompass nearly all of the KVOE listening area, including the entirety of Chase, Greenwood and Coffey Counties, all but the very northern edge of Lyon County and the southern edges of Osage and Wabaunsee counties. The slight risk is in place due to the potential for strong storms that could produce heavy rainfall and potential flooding across the area.
In fact, a flood watch remains in place for all area counties from 1 pm Thursday until 7 am Friday with 2-3 inches of rainfall possible over the next 24 hours. Once the storms and showers clear, the main weather concern will turn to the heat, which is expected to ramp up over the next several days.
Following most cloudy conditions and highs right around 80, air temperatures will steadily increase starting Friday, with highs in the low 80s approaching 90 degrees by Saturday and reaching the low to mid 90s by Monday. Heat index values at or above 100 will be common through the coming weekend into the middle of next week.
