Steamy summertime conditions appear to stay locked in place through the Fourth of July and, possibly, into the middle of next week.
High temperatures in the low to mid-90s and dewpoints in the low 70s will lead to heat index readings at or above 100 degrees through Saturday and then just below 100 from Sunday to Wednesday. Overnight lows remain the 70s for the next week.
This continues a sticky week leading up to the holiday festivities areawide this weekend. So far, our peak heat index reading has been 105 Monday, followed by 103 Tuesday and 101 Wednesday. High temperatures have been in the low 90s all week.
Lyon and Wabaunsee counties are in heat advisories through 8 pm Saturday, while Greenwood County is in a heat advisory through 8 pm Thursday. Coffey and Osage counties, meanwhile, are in a heat warning until 8 pm Saturday.
There may be short-term, daily relief with slight to moderate chances of showers and storms beginning Saturday afternoon. Currently, the best chances of storm activity are for late Saturday night and early Sunday morning — including a marginal severe weather risk for wind gusts up to 60 mph — and Tuesday afternoon.
