What are called “geometric improvements” are coming to part of Commercial Street in south Emporia.
Officially, a significant street improvement begins July 13 on Kansas Highway 99 between Kansas Avenue and Soden Road. The project will include milling and asphalt overlay for the street, but it also will include asphalt paving of the current gravel shoulder, grading, storm sewer, driveway and sidewalk improvements, pavement markings and storm sewer enhancements. Traffic control will mean one-lane traffic and lane shifts, as well as temporary closures of side streets and driveways. The city of Emporia says there will be one lane of thru traffic that will be maintained at all times.
Additional information from the City of Emporia:
• Commercial Street will see construction along the gravel shoulder while still allowing access to businesses along the construction route.
• Mailboxes will be temporarily moved to side streets nearby in a gang cluster during the project (per Emporia postmaster guidance).
• Trash service will continue on the same days of service. KDOT’s contractor will move polycarts to a side street for City solid waste staff on days of pickup and put them back after.
• Residents will be reminded not to drive into work zones signed by temporary traffic control.
More information is available through the Kansas Department of Transportation. This is the city’s Connecting Link Improvement Program project involving a partnership with the city and KDOT.
