With international football’s grandest event — the World Cup — into the quarterfinal stage and with American football games still over a month away, there is another brand of football that has a noted ESU alum doing very well.
Thanks to that audio from TSN 1050, we take you to the Canadian Football League, where record-holding wide receiver Tyler Kahmann is having a solid season with the Toronto Argonauts — solid enough to earn the praise of Head Coach Mike Miller.
A native of Haysville, Kahmann holds virtually every ESU receiving record, whether it’s for single game action, single season or career activity. He also holds the MIAA records for career touchdowns and single-game receiving yards. But he had some adjustments to make after the Indianapolis Colts signed him to its practice squad and released him the next day. He waited for a month before the Argos claimed him as part of their expansion draft process. Kahmann has responded, with 16 catches — 4 for touchdowns — through the first four games of the season. Off the field, Kahmann says there’s not much difference in the routine between NFL and CFL play. On the field, which is bigger and gives you one less down to keep moving? That’s a different story.
Kahmann says he enjoys Toronto, and he’s still grateful for the chance he had to play at ESU under Coach Garin Higgins.
Kahmann also says he has had numerous conversations with another ESU grad and former coach who did well in the CFL, NFL and Arena Football: linebacker Jeff Richards.
Tonight, the Argos travel to Winnipeg to take on the Blue Bombers. Game time is 7:30 pm.
