It’s a busy — and big — week for SOS.
The crisis service agency has an anniversary celebration Thursday, and Executive Director Mickey Edwards says it’s essentially marking 3 different birthdays in one event. It starts with the big one: SOS as an organization is noting its 50th year of help. But there are other milestones to celebrate.
Activities will be at the Peter Pan Park arbor from 5-8 pm, including free hot dogs from Walmart, balloon animals, face painting from the Emporia Arts Council, equipment from the Emporia Fire and Emporia Police Departments and more.
Edwards says it’s a time for celebration, but it’s also a time where SOS has been busy with high-impact cases across its categories of service.
Besides CASA of the Flint Hills and the Child Advocacy Center, SOS also provides a Child Visitation and Exchange Center and a range of crisis services, including shelter space, advocacy, prevention education and help with protection orders.
Meanwhile, the annual SOS Strong summertime fundraiser continues through Aug 14 with 14 participants, all working to raise at least $1,000 for SOS programs and to generate awareness for SOS services. We will have SOS Strong Ambassadors on KVOE’s Talk of Emporia at 11:06 am Tuesday.
