Part of Lyon County Fair activities Tuesday night involved honoring the memory of a driving force in the event the past 30 years.
Gregg Gasche passed away last week after a fight with brain cancer, and the Fair Board dedicated the Fairgrounds Arena in Gasche’s memory as part of Buck Rumble and Roll activities. Residents were also encouraged to wear purple as part of Cowboy Up Against Cancer.
Gasche’s son, Adam, says it was a fitting site for a tribute, given Gasche’s development of the event 30 years ago.

Born in Emporia, Gasche ultimately settled in rural Hartford. A rancher and trucker for much of his life, Gasche served on the Lyon County Fair Board for over 40 years and helped construction when the Eagle Creek Saddle Club moved west of Olpe in 1977.
A Rosary will take place at 10 am Aug 15 at St Mary Catholic Church in Hartford, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 am at the church. Burial will follow at Maydale Cemetery near Olpe. Due to limited seating that’s expected for the funeral, the Gasche family is also inviting people to attend a Cowboy Gathering at 7 pm Aug 14 at the Fairgrounds Anderson Building.
Gasche was 69 when he passed away Thursday. He’s survived by his wife Nancy, 2 sons, a daughter and 9 grandchildren.
