Another round of thunderstorms is likely Thursday night into Friday. Some may be strong to severe with heavy rain as another concern.
Showers and storms become likely by mid-evening areawide. The main hazards appear to be hail up to the size of quarters and gusty winds. However, the National Weather Service has mentioned concerns about heavy rainfall and isolated flooding with slow-moving storms that may train over areas soaked by storms Wednesday night.
Any weather issues will follow an eventful Wednesday night, which included hail to the size of eggs just east of Emporia, wind gusts up to 65 mph areawide and nearly 4 inches of rainfall in Reading.
All three of Emporia’s new car dealers are dealing with widespread damage to their inventories, although the severity of the hail damage is still being calculated. Meanwhile, potential crop damage reports are pending and there are no indications of issues at Hartford City Hall, which suffered significant damage due to a windstorm on Jully 4.

Noon Thursday: Cleanup underway from Emporia to east after Wednesday night storm activity
Cleanup is underway across parts of Emporia and eastern Lyon County after severe storms late Wednesday night.
Storms brought wind gusts of at least 60 mph, hail to the size of eggs and rainfall totals of anywhere from half an inch to nearly 4 inches to the KVOE listening area. Lyon County Emergency Management Director Jarrod Fell says damage is notable from central Emporia to the east and southeast.
Roofing, siding and insurance companies will all be busy after this storm. Fell tells KVOE News it’s best to work through insurance companies, both for claims and also for repairs.
The cleanup may well continue with a chance of showers and storms, including a marginal severe weather risk for wind and hail, just south of Interstate 35 and US Highway 50 after sunset.

Hail wasn’t long-lived, but it was impressive as part of severe thunderstorm activity late Wednesday night.
Storms began affecting Lyon County around 10:30 am, dropping hail ranging from penny-size to egg-size in and immediately around Emporia as storms moved to the east. Brief heavy rainfall was also noted as scattered storms crossed the area.

The hailstones caused damage across town and into Thorndale, mainly with broken windows but also to siding. Wind also blew down several tree limbs of at least 4 inches in diameter.
Additional showers and storms are possible but unlikely through mid-morning before a much better chance of widespread showers and storms by Thursday evening. Storms may continue into mid-morning Friday before conditions dry out.
