Next week, the Emporia Recreation Commission is encouraging residents to learn more about the plans for a major shift in the city’s public recreation facilities.
The Rec Center Steering Committee has two community open house events planned: Wednesday at the Emporia Senior Center and Thursday at Flint Hills Technical College. Both activities will be from 4-6 pm. Both are come-and-go-styled events.
The open houses will detail the Steering Committee’s final recommendations on a nearly $24 million construction package, with most of the funding from a proposed 0.25-percent city sales tax going to build a new rec center near Jones Aquatic Center. The rest of the funding will renovate and reconfigure Lee Beran Rec Center, Emporia’s home for public recreation activities for decades.
Emporia city commissioners are set to discuss the recommendation as part of their meeting slate Aug 19.
