With the ongoing heatwave locally, residents are continuously being reminded to take necessary precautions to limit their exposure to the elements as much as possible for the time being.
Unfortunately, certain precautions are not universal, meaning there are those who cannot alter or limit their time outdoors like others. This includes local first responders such as the Emporia Fire Department who have to be prepared to brave the harsh heat at a moment’s notice 24/7.
With that in mind, KVOE News reached out to EFD to inquire as to how they attempt to stay cool and healthy in the harsh conditions. According to Battalion Chief Eron Steinlage, it all starts with proper preparation in the firehouse.
When they are called to a scene, specifically a fire call, the heat becomes a bigger concern when you factor in the flames, the temperatures and the heavy bunker gear firefighters must wear. Whether it is extreme heat or cold, Steinlage says the fire department doesn’t really have a way to train for these conditions, so they have to rely on vigilance and treatment if a team member starts showing signs of heat exhaustion or other ailments while on a call.
The ongoing heatwave is expected to continue into the upcoming weekend with air temperatures around or above 100 between Thursday and Saturday and heat indexes around 110. An Extreme heat warning continues for the entire listening area, and much of the state of Kansas, through 7 pm Friday.
