The extreme heat warning in place for most of this week has now been extended.
Originally set to end at 7 pm Friday, the warning now goes until 7 pm Saturday. Temperatures on Friday should climb to 100 with heat index readings as high as 107. Currently, Saturday air temperatures should peak just below 100 degrees, leading to heat index readings around 103.
Our current heat wave may well have peaked Thursday. Air temperatures got as high as 102 in Emporia, and the heat index went as high as 112 after three straight days of heat index readings between 107-109.
Conditions ease Sunday with a chance of storms and a high of 90 degrees. Showers and storms are also possible Monday with a high in the mid-80s before a brief push back into the mid-90s for Tuesday and Wednesday.
Before that, graphics guidance from the National Weather Service calls for a marginal severe weather risk for wind gusts around 60 mph. Areas along and south of Interstate 35 and US Highway 50 are in a marginal severe weather risk area Saturday, with 60 mph wind again the main concern.
