Insurance companies that serve residents in and out of Emporia are still busy after the destructive hailstorm that hit the area in the late-night hours of Aug 5.
Brian Filinger of Farm Bureau Insurance says calls and emails were already starting to come into his office as he arrived around 7:30 am Aug 6.
Filinger says damage was severe, especially affecting east Emporia, northeast of Emporia along Burlingame Road and Thorndale.
Hail as large as eggs was reported by the National Weather Service.
Bean fields were looking good, thanks to timely rainfall. They aren’t now.
Even at this stage, nearly 10 days after the storm, roofing and auto repair representatives are crisscrossing the area looking for business. Filinger says some of them are not legitimate.
Filinger asks residents to be careful, especially with out-of-town companies. In fact, he suggests sticking with local or area contractors for the work you need.
The Kansas Attorney General’s Office now issues its own reminders about unregistered contractors any time there is damaging storm activity, especially when it comes to roofing companies. The Attorney General’ Office says residents can confirm a company’s registration status by going online to ag.ks.gov. It also recommends that residents get recommendations, references, written estimates from at least 3 different contractors and do their own homework by checking complaint records through the Better Business Bureau.
