Vamos a Pescar celebrates its 10th anniversary Saturday, and Emporia State’s Prophet Aquatic Research and Outreach Center will be abuzz with activity.
Speaking of activities, that list is longer than it was a decade ago, but USD 253 Student & Family Liaison Patricia Saenz-Reyes says the core mission has been the same throughout.
PAROC is now hosting Vamos for the 5th straight year. Director Alex Hayes learned about Vamos as a student through former director Daphne Mayes.
Saenz-Reyes also credits What’s In Outdoors host Phil Taunton for developing the idea that has now become Vamos.
One thing to keep in mind will be parking. With hayrack rides being used and a lot of people expected, Hayes says East 18th directly in front of PAROC will be off-limits.
Activities will be from 9 am to 1 pm at PAROC as part of a collaboration involving the facility, USD 253’s Migrant Education Program, What’s In Outdoors, Hispanics of Today & Tomorrow and the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks. The Salvation Army, Cash Saver, Walmart, IHOP, Hostess, Kari’s Diamonds and Bridal, Bluestem Farm & Ranch Supply. Sutherlands, Mitchell-Markowitz Construction J’s Carryout and Fowler Farms are all involved in the 10th anniversary event.
Fishing education, games, interactive activities, crafts, hiking and other educational options are planned, with Homegrown Coffey and The Sugar Fix also on hand with beverages and sweet treats, respectively. Activities are free with no registration required.
