Several city street projects are moving forward as fall approaches.
Emporia City Engineer Jim Ubert says Kansas Highway 99, or South Commercial, continues with off-street work as part of a larger set of geometric improvements. In fact, he says things should “blow and go” once the underground utilities are all moved out of the way.
Work will eventually expand along South Commercial between Kansas Avenue to Soden Road.
While K-99 is nearing the main part of construction, the Overlander Road expansion and improvement work is just about done. Ubert says this is a big step for current businesses, as well as Flint Hills Technical College as it gets ready to move its Certified Drivers License and Precision Agriculture programs to that area.
Overlander Road could well be done by mid-September.
Ubert says Street Preservation work is done, while Street Rehab is should be done within the next few weeks. The two projects handle different aspects of street improvements. Street Preservation handles cracks and other surface-level street work, while Street Rehab will replace the pavement, curb and gutter and also add handicapped-accessible ramps as part of the immediate work zones.
