Once again, the local community has several activities planned to commemorate and honor the lives lost and the patriotism displayed by our country on September 11th, 2001 and the days that followed.
Activities will include the annual Random Acts of Patriotism demonstration, which will see residents displaying American Flags on the Interstate 35 Melvern overpass from sunup to sundown. This year will mark the 24th anniversary of the demonstration, which began a year after the tragedy.
Debi Fuller, one of the longtime spokespersons and organizers of the event, recalled the demonstration’s origins during a recent interview on KVOE’s Morning Show.
In Fuller’s opinion, the event has become so successful and achieved an impressive longevity because of the dedication of individuals who recall the event and do not want to see it lost to history, noting there is a large number of individuals who only know of the event what they have been told.
Again, Random Acts of Patriotism will take place from sun up to sun down on 9/11 and all are welcome to attend and participate.
Separately, that same evening, the American Legion Post 5 will be hosting a time of remembrance for the 25th anniversary of 9/11, with Clay Childs of Post 5, another recent guest of KVOE’s Morning Show, saying it is a somber event, but a very important one.
The commemoration event will take place at 6:30 pm and will provide a time for individuals to share their stories and memories of 9/11 and he encourages the entire family to attend.
In recognition of the 25th anniversary, the Legion will have a display of 25 flags on its grounds as part of the day’s activities. On Sept. 11, 2001, nearly 3,000 people lost their lives after hijacked planes crashed into both World Trade Center towers, the Pentagon and a field outside Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
