Conditions may be drier than normal for summertime, but it will still be hot this week — and hot enough, in the short term, for an alert through the National Weather Service.
A heat advisory is in place for Lyon, Coffey, Morris, Osage and Wabaunsee counties through 7 pm. Air temperatures will peak at 101 Sunday and 100 Monday. Dewpoints will be in the mid-60s both days, pushing heat index readings to 104 Sunday and 102 Monday.
Similar conditions are expected all week, and NWS has not ruled out extending the current advisory.
With the hot conditions in place, NWS encourages people to wear light and loose-fitting clothes, drink extra water, take extra breaks and change work schedules to handle more physical labor in the morning and evening. Residents should also check on elderly neighbors as the heat continues and never leave children or pets in vehicles while running errands.

9 am Sunday: Triple-digit heat coming Sunday, Monday
For much of this summer, above-normal summertime heat has been accompanied by seasonal or extreme humidity.
That wasn’t the case Saturday, when the high temperature of 101 combined with relative humidity levels at or below 33 percent to move the peak heat index reading to 102.
Relative humidity levels and resulting dewpoints may be low as well Sunday and Monday. Air temperatures as high as 100 on Sunday may generate a peak heat index of 102, while high temperatures of 100 on Monday could lead to a peak heat index of 102.
For the upcoming week, high temperatures will remain in the mid- to upper 90s. Heat index readings will be very close to 100 degrees all week.
No rain is currently expected all week.
