The annual Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over law enforcement campaign is now more than a week underway and DUI arrests are up slightly from the previous year.
According to Lyon County SGT. Danny Broyles, Lyon County Sheriff’s Deputies have had three DUI arrests and 60 contacts since the start of the campaign on September 23. In 2025, the campaign had a total of two arrests and 160 contacts.
While these numbers may seem small, Broyles says they are anticipating an uptick in traffic over the course of the Labor Day weekend, which is a typical trend each year.
Broyles explained in an interview with KVOE News Tuesday that the campaign is not only about getting impaired drivers off the road but also keeping them off in the future. To that end, he says that in addition to the extra law enforcement presence locally, officers are also providing a large amount of education throughout the campaign’s duration.
Nationwide, nearly 12,000 people died due to drunk-driving crashes in 2024, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Broyles says it is important that if you are planning to attend an event or function where you plan to drink, you need to have a plan in place to get home safely, either in the form of a designated driver, by calling a ride-share service, or by making sleeping arrangements in advance.
DUI arrests do have several consequences, including fines upwards of $10,000 and the potential loss of driving privileges for a year or more.
