Osage City made the most of its big-play opportunities Friday night, rallying from a halftime deficit to defeat Olpe 20-7 in the season opener at the new Olpe Fitness Park.
Osage City struck first when Sawyer Speece broke loose for a 61-yard touchdown run with 9:03 remaining in the opening quarter. The Indians missed the conversion, leaving the score 6-0.
Olpe answered in the second quarter. Abbott Bailey scored on a 31-yard touchdown run with 9:10 remaining in the half, and the Eagles’ extra point gave them a 7-6 advantage heading into halftime.
The Eagles’ defense kept Osage City off the scoreboard through the remainder of the first half, but the Indians quickly regained the lead after intermission.
Speece again found daylight, this time racing 78 yards for a touchdown on a completed pass from Reed Silver with 8:28 remaining in the third quarter. The score put Osage City ahead 14-7.
The Indians added another rushing touchdown late in the third quarter when Silver scored on a 13-yard run with 2:41 remaining, pushing the lead to 20-7.
Olpe could not mount another scoring drive in the fourth quarter as Osage City closed out the victory.
Osage City’s Head Coach Andrew Gantenbein was happy how his lineman allowed for the Indians to dictate the line of scrimmage.
The Indians finished with 202 yards rushing and 80 yards passing. Silver finishing with 95 yards on the ground, and Speece with 91.
Olpe totaled 128 yards on the ground and 39 yards through the air. Bailey led Olpe’s rushing attack with 92 yards.
The Eagles will travel to Wabaunsee next week. Osage City will face Council Grove next week.
