Emporia High football is back at Welch Stadium this Friday night for the Spartans’ first home game of the season.
Mix 104.9 FM will have you covered beginning at 6:45 p.m. with the RV Doc Pregame Show live from Welch Stadium, followed by kickoff at 7.
The Spartans opened the season in dominant fashion last Friday, rolling past Wichita North 67-0. The Black and Red defense played a major role in the victory, scoring three touchdowns, including two pick-sixes from sophomore defensive back Noah Rodecap.
Despite the lopsided win, head coach Daniel Goodman has been focused on the areas his team needs to improve.
Goodman’s biggest goal this week has been making sure his team doesn’t become complacent following such a convincing opening-night victory.
Rodecap was a major contributor in the win and was named the Emporia Athlete of the Week. Rodecap says the defense has spent this week focusing on the fundamentals as they prepare for Wichita West.
The Pioneers enter Friday night’s matchup 0-1 after falling to Dodge City 42-20 in their season opener. Wichita West allowed 178 yards on the ground in that game, something Emporia High will likely look to take advantage of with its rushing attack.
The Black and Red ground game ran for 315 yards in week one. Senior offensive lineman, Jonathon Couch, said the guys blocked well.
The Spartans will look to make it two straight wins when they host Wichita West Friday night at Welch Stadium.
