Two people were hurt and hospitalized after a bus crash northeast of Emporia early Monday.
The wreck involving a Greyhound bus happened shortly after 5:30 am at Kansas Turnpike mile marker 131 northbound, so just outside the Emporia service exit and nearly 5 miles northeast of the Emporia exit. The Kansas Highway Patrol says the bus was approaching the Emporia service exit when the driver, 53-year-old Bonnie Scott of Raytown, Missouri, fell asleep at the wheel. The bus hit a delineator post on the shoulder.
Emporia Fire Capt. Greg Davis says over 20 people were on board. Both of the injured people, listed by the Highway Patrol crash log as 34-year-old Curtis Booker of Houston, Texas, and 21-year-old Eriell Gallaher of Kansas City, Missouri, were taken to Newman Regional Health for suspected minor injuries. At least 4 others suffered potential or minor injuries but were not hospitalized.
Highway Patrol troopers and Lyon County deputies were on the scene for well over an hour, but traffic got back to normal by 8 am.
