Localized flooding has ended after heavy rainfall for much of the KVOE listening area earlier this week.
The Marais des Cygnes River above Reading was out of its banks from mid-morning to early afternoon Wednesday. The river crested at 19.63 feet around noon, less than a foot above flood stage, and went back under 19 feet less than 2 hours later. Damage reports are pending.
Other river gauges stayed well within their banks after the area got anywhere from 0.20 to 4.5 inches of rainfall Tuesday into Wednesday, with the heaviest amounts reported along and north of Interstate 35 and US Highway 50. Despite the heavy rainfall, the Lyon County Highway Department did not put out any lists of roads needing to be closed due to flooding.
Hot conditions are ongoing into the upcoming weekend, with high temperatures in the low to mid-90s and heat index readings near 100. Stormy conditions become likely Saturday night, with showers and possible storms Sunday into Monday. The Saturday evening forecast currently has a marginal risk for wind activity, while the current forecast calls for 1-1.5 inches of rainfall between Saturday evening and Monday afternoon.
