Once again, Kansas Spanish Speakers brought people from all walks of life together under one roof at Flint Hills Technical College for a night of fun, culture, and community at its third Lotería night event on Friday.
Affectionately known as “Mexican bingo,” the traditional game shares many similarities to the American version of bingo, with the only true difference being the use of pictures and words rather than letters and numbers. Like American bingo, Loteria offers many prizes over multiple rounds, with the grand prize being $300 cash, and all prizes are donated by local businesses.
Kansas Spanish Speakers Founder Lelan Dains says the support they continue to receive from the local community for the event time after time is heartwarming and encouraging to the local non-profit.
While not everyone left the evening with one of the more than 20 prizes, Dains and many attendees agreed nobody lost on the night. Dains says while winning is fun, the most important piece of the event is the connections it helps to create, noting there is always a good mix of individuals from various cultures and walks of life in attendance.
Creating these connections has always been a central focus of the Kansas Spanish Speakers mission, but Dains believes that in today’s social climate, that lesson is more important than ever before.
