Newman Regional Health has announced a new inpatient menu for those currently hospitalized, which is meant to provide more supportive nutrition during hospital stays.
Representatives of Newman joined KVOE’s Morning Show Monday to discuss the changes, highlighting the importance of proper nutrition in the healing process. The menu, according to Registered Dietitian Cammy Tucker, was created in an effort to align with “current nutrition science” and insights set forth through the 2025-2030 Dietary Guidelines for Americans and received input from hospital dietitians, nurses, providers, leadership and Nutrition Services.
Newman Chief Nursing Officer Heather Aylward says when it comes to healing, meals provided to those receiving healthcare are far more than just food on a tray; it is “another opportunity to support healing.”
Diabetes Program Coordinator and Clinical Dietitian Sara Patterson says the work to develop the new menu is directly related to the hospital’s efforts to improve health outside of the hospital as well as inside. Patterson says she believes the menu will help to “stir conversation” as to healthier ways of living, programming for which Newman has in abundance.
To accomplish this, Patterson noted the hospital provides a range of programs including diabetes education and support, medical nutrition therapy, one-on-one nutrition counseling, development of healthy eating strategies and disease prevention and illness management.
