The Emporia High cross country team is set to head west on Oct. 24, for the Class 5A Sub-State Cross Country Meet at the Lake Barton Cross Country Course in Great Bend.
As postseason assignments take shape, the Spartans find themselves grouped in a competitive 18-school field. Under this sub-state format, the meet features two seeded boys’ races and two seeded girls’ races, with the top three teams and top 15 individual finishers in each race earning a spot at the Class 5A state championship meet.
Emporia will compete alongside a field that includes Andover, Andover Central, Arkansas City, Bishop Carroll, Eisenhower, Goddard, host Great Bend, Hays, Hutchinson, Kapaun Mt. Carmel, Maize South, Newton, Salina Central, Salina South, Topeka West, Valley Center, and Wichita West. The schools will be divided into two pods closer to the race date.

The Black and Red will be chasing peak performances on the Lake Barton course to punch their tickets to state, but until then, the regular season continues in Council Grove on Thursday.
