The 2026-27 Lyon County budget is now certified.
Lyon County Commissioners approved the budget unanimously as part of their regular action meeting Thursday morning. The budget comes to just over $40 million with a mill levy rate of 54.117, a decrease of more than two mills from the prior year.
The budget will not exceed the revenue neutral rate as decided by commissioners when they voted not to exceed RNR during a meeting in late September. Commissioners and Controller Dan Williams did note the increasing difficulties of the budget process multiple times over the last several months due to the combination of rising inflation and cost of living; however, all commissioners have stated they feel it is an adequate budget that funds all major needs without taking away from essential services.
The budget included nearly $2.8 million in appropriations to outside agencies, a better-than-$28,000 decrease from the prior year. The largest contributor to that decrease was Newman Regional Health, which voluntarily decreased their request by $150,000, according to Williams.
In separate business Thursday, commissioners approved a pair of requests from Lyon County Planning and Zoning Administrator Sam Seeley. Those items include a recommendation of denial for an agriculture conditional use permit for a “private recreational vehicle park” submitted by Luke Senft.
The second saw commissioners approve a recommendation of approval for a separate permit for a communications tower submitted by Next-Tech Wireless. Commissioners also approved a request from Facilities Director Robbie Weiss for the annual Tech Electronics fire alarm test and inspection for county-owned properties, including the courthouse, courthouse annex, the Anderson and Bowyer buildings, mechanical shop, Sheriff’s Office and jail.
Commissioners also held a single executive session for an employee evaluation with no action taken following. Lyon County Commissioners will reconvene for their weekly action meeting next Thursday at 9 am inside the Lyon County Courthouse Commission Chambers.
