Saturday brought a lot of horsepower to the Lyon County Fairgrounds.
Beacon for Hope Suicide Prevention had its 5th annual Hope with Horsepower car show, bringing cars, trucks and ATVs to the space just north of the Bowyer Building. Among the presenters was Jeff Stockton, who made the trip north from Fredonia to participate. Stockton says he has a nephew who is a Navy veteran and has struggled with mental wellness. He has also lost several friends to suicide, so he welcomed the atmosphere behind the event.
Stockton brought a 3-wheel Polaris Slingshot R model to the show.
Stockton says the Polaris resembles a smaller car in how it drives. It is different in how it’s registered.
Stockton says the nature of the car — and its bright orange color — draws a lot of attention.
Over 60 vehicles were parked at the Fairgrounds for the show, with several food trucks also on hand for those attending.
Hope with Horsepower follows the first-ever You Matter Fest. That event late last month combined Beacon’s Rage Against the Stigma, Mad! Sad! Glad and suicide prevention walk standalone events into one. Beacon is still raising money to offset ancillary costs like printing expenses through its Ignite Hope campaign. Details are available through Beacon’s website, hopelinks.org, and its Facebook page.
