Emporia Fire was busy with a pair of gas leaks Tuesday morning.
Firefighters went to the south side of White Auditorium after a leak was reported at the Emporia Police Department garage shortly before 9:30 am. Battalion Chief Eron Steinlage says the smell was due to sewer gas, not natural gas, and firefighters cleared the scene within a few minutes.
Around 11:15 am, crews went to the 200 block of East 2nd, or in the alley between Market and Union. An excavator punched into a 2-inch gas line, causing no evacuations but forcing the temporary halt of trains passing near the site. No injuries were reported.
