After a short hiatus, the Cut is back on the menu, or rather, the community calendar, next week.
The 9th annual installment of Flint Hills Technical College’s culinary competition will take place at the college from 6 pm to 9 pm. As always, the competition, patterned after the popular Food Network show Chopped, will see four culinary arts students competing across three rounds of competition, with one competitor eliminated each round.
As mentioned, the event did take a slight break last year due to the age of the current class of students, with administrators saying they wanted to give them more time to hone their skills before placing them into the high-pressure live setting. Speaking to KVOE News recently, FHTC Foundation Events and Outreach Coordinator Stephanie Anderson says the postponement was unfortunate, but she and others are extremely excited for its return, with Anderson saying she has quickly “fallen in love” with the event.
In addition to highlighting the college’s culinary arts students, the event will also highlight the multimedia design department, whose students will be live streaming the event from start to finish for a crowd inside the FHTC conference center. Anderson says this is a tremendous opportunity for their students to gain practical experience not only in live production, but also in pre-production, noting all of the work that goes into the event, in some cases, months in advance.
The competing students are Emily Hulce, Susana Sanchez, Isaac Joy and Antonio Miranda, who will be judged by A panel of local culinary experts, including Jessica Symmonds of Gourmet to Go, Gufler Mansion Chef Julia Zinke, and Robin Figueroa of The Daily Station. Tickets for the Cut are available online at givesmart.com/events, with individual tickets costing $20 and tables of 8 available for $200.
