A year off did not hinder the quality of competition for FHTC’s annual culinary competition, the Cut, Thursday evening.
The 9th installment of the event saw four competitors, Susana Sanchez, Emily Hulce, Antonio Miranda and Isaac Joy test their creativity and skill across three rounds of competition where they were challenged to create an appetizer, an entree and a dessert. At the end, Sanchez was declared the winner by the panel of judges, receiving a $250 scholarship and the title of Cut Champion.
Sanchez says winning was an amazing feeling, adding that she did it not only for herself, but her family.
Sanchez did struggle early in the appetizer round, but recovered quickly to stand out amongst the field through the final two rounds of competition. She says her biggest focus was to make it to the dessert round, where she felt the most comfortable.
Taking second place in the event was Hulce, followed by Miranda in third and Joy in fourth.
FHTC President Dr. Caron Daugherty spoke with KVOE News following the event and said the creativity and courage shown by their students in the kitchen is a great representation of the department as a whole.
Daugherty also paid a great deal of credit to the college’s multimedia department, whose students live-streamed the event from start to finish to a nearly full conference room. She says they, just as much as the students in the kitchen, deserved to be celebrated.
The Cut served as the kickoff for a stretch of activities for the college as part of their Wrangler Weekend. Up next for FHTC will be a family movie night on the campus’ front lawn at 6 pm Friday night with a screening of Toy Story 5.
The weekend will conclude with an open house event Saturday from 10 am to 2 pm where residents can tour the college, its various labs and classrooms and use the college’s CDL trucking simulator.
