Sub-state assignments have been released by the Kansas State High School Activities Association, and area volleyball teams are just one strong Saturday away from punching their tickets to the state tournament.
With sub-state championships on the line this weekend, several area squads will look to keep their seasons alive and earn a trip to state.
In Class 2A, Chase County will serve as host to Olpe, Northeast and Cedar Vale. The Bulldogs will open against the Eagles in the first round, with the winner advancing to play for the sub-state championship and a state tournament berth.
Lyndon will travel to Pittsburg for its sub-state, where the Tigers will take on St. Mary’s Colgan. A win would set up a championship matchup against the winner of Humboldt and Bluestem.
In Class 1A Division I, Burlingame and Northern Heights will both make the trip to Centralia, landing on opposite sides of the bracket. The Lady Cats will take on host Centralia, while the Wildcats will face Rural Vista. Both teams will look to navigate their respective brackets and come away with a sub-state title.
In Class 1A Division II, three Lyon County League teams will converge in Melvern for a chance to advance to state. Marais des Cygnes Valley will look to earn a return trip to White Auditorium in Emporia, where the state tournament will be held, as the Trojans match up with South Haven.
Waverly and Lebo will meet in the second match of the sub-state. The Wolves have swept both regular-season meetings with the Bulldogs this fall and will look to carry that momentum into Saturday’s win-or-go-home matchup.
All sub-state tournaments are scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. Saturday.
