Emporia State University hosted its annual Hayes Lecture Series Wednesday evening as part of the university’s homecoming week of festivities.
ESU alumnus, entrepreneur, executive coach and leadership consultant Jermaine Jamison was this year’s keynote speaker. Titled “The Leader Within,” Jamison chatted with KVOE before his speech, which he said was all about encouraging others to dig deep and lead from an authentic place.
Though Jamison’s childhood was less than ideal, he said his experiences turned him into the leader he is today.
From washing his clothes in the bathtub and drying them by the oven to leading teams of people decades later, Jamison’s own life experiences, he said, show that it doesn’t matter what route folks take, just that they reach their desired destination.
In a world where so much of leadership is focused on the work people put out, Jamison said he’s passionate about reminding folks that it’s the work they put into themselves that allows them to best show up and lead others.
ESU’s slate of homecoming activities will continue for the rest of the week. For a full schedule or more information, visit emporia.edu/homecoming.
