A little over a year after the Emporia Veterans Legacy Fund brought the Wall That Heals to the community, membership announced plans to bring another major display to the community next year.
This past Friday, during KVOE’s Talk of Emporia, local veteran Clay Childs stated that after honoring those who served in Vietnam, the next display will be used to honor those who served during the “global war on terror” post 9/11.
Childs says this exhibit has been a major goal for the organization since last year’s display. The Tunnel to Towers 9/11 Never Forget Mobile Exhibit is an 83-foot-high tractor-trailer that transforms into a 1,100-square-foot traveling museum that honors the victims of September 11 and the brave men and women who gave their lives both during and after the events of 9/11.
Since its inception following the arrival of the Wall That Heals in Emporia last year, the Veterans Legacy Fund has noted its core mission is to honor veterans of all wars, branches and generations throughout our nation’s history. He says this latest opportunity is one way they are meeting that mission, but also an opportunity to potentially inspire the next generation of veterans.
Childs says it is shaping up to be an annual goal for the agency to bring experiences like this to the Emporia community as well as those surrounding it.
The Veterans Legacy Fund is one of the first-year organizations taking part in the 13th annual Match Day next month, with more than 30 local non-profit organizations set to benefit from community donations. Donations in the form of cash, check, or commodities are currently being accepted, while online donations for Match Day, set for November 16th, begin at midnight on November 15th and continue through 11:59 p.m. on November 17th.
