Lyon County’s voter turnout has reached 10 percent following the largest in-office turnout for the advance voting cycle Tuesday.
According to Lyon County Election Officer Amie Jones, Tuesday saw 220 registered voters cast their ballots inside of the Lyon County Courthouse, bringing the total number of voters to just over 2,260, or 10 10 percent of the county’s registered voters. At the start of the in-office voting cycle last week, Jones had stated she was hopeful the final voting turnout could be between 75 and 80 percent by the end of election day.
Jones lowered that expectation just slightly this week, saying she is still hopeful the election could see a voter turnout of 70 percent, or close to it.
The deadline for those wanting a mail ballot has now passed, as the deadline was 5 pm Tuesday. As of Wednesday, the election office has sent out just under 700 ballots, with more than 400 returned. A reminder: while the three-day grace period for mail ballots is still in effect, several legal cases are working their way through the court system and so Jones and other officials are advising residents not to rely on it.
Instead, she says residents should plan to have their ballots returned ahead of or on Election Day, noting they can drop those off at the county drop box, in the Lyon County Election Office, or at their local polling site. Advance voting inside the Lyon County Courthouse continues from 8 am to 5 pm through Friday and will conclude Monday with hours of 8 am to noon.
Election Day is Tuesday, with polls opening at 7 am and closing at 7 pm. Jones also says that if voters have any questions before they head to the polls, they can find answers on the county’s election website.
A reminder that election staffers cannot provide any guidance at the polls when it comes to ballot questions, specifically what a yes or no vote means for special questions; however, the election office has provided visual aids at all polling sites voters can review.
