The city of Hartford now has a price for its new city hall and work could be getting underway before the end of the month.
Hartford Mayor Kenny Hamman, who spoke with KVOE News after Wednesday’s City Council meeting, said MRSK Buildings, which has been handling the demolition of the old city hall, submitted a quote of about $460,000. As KVOE News has reported, the city was granted $500,000 for the project, which would more than cover the entire cost of the construction; however, Hamman says the project will also bring additional expenses that the city will cover itself.
Hamman also says there will be needed repairs to the sidewalk adjacent to the structure and reminded KVOE News that work is still ongoing to fill the hole left by previously unplanned excavation work of the previous city hall and it is unclear if that excavation work will be covered by insurance. Hamman noted earlier in the week they had sent that expense off to their insurance company to see if it would in fact cover the cost but have yet to hear back.
As for the utility and sidewalk repairs, Hamman says the city should be able to cover those costs with some city funds and additional insurance dollars. An exact project timeline is currently pending; however, Hamman says they are hopeful it could begin before the end of the month and as MRSK is handling both the demolition and construction, he anticipates it should begin as soon as the excavation work is completed.
Hamman has stated previously that the new facility will be similar to the previous city hall, as it is located at the same site, and ran through the exact makeup of the building while speaking with KVOE News.
Once the work begins, Hamman says it should take about 6 months to complete.
The demolition of the previous city hall followed a damaging windstorm that blew the top of the building off on July 4th and caused other significant structural damage. Wednesday’s meeting will take place at 7 pm inside the new Hartford community building.
